Purpose and accountabilities
The junior Control & Automation engineer will be part of the PACO team, supporting Shell Argentina. The focus of this role is to provide PACO support in a wide context with focus on design integrity (HAZOP & SIF/IPF activities), operating integrity (alarm management & process control /DCS) and technical integrity - Safety Critical Element management and associated maintenance strategies of the PACO-owned safety barriers - (Shutdown- & Detection systems SIS/IPS, F&G).
Job Description
- The Process Automation Control Optimization (PACO) Engineer’s role is to provide direct technical support to all aspects of controls, automation, and safety instrumented systems in the Argentina Asset.
- Technical support could include:
- Definition of maintenance strategies (including spare parts strategies) and tasks
- Maintaining documentation (e.g. cause and effect tables, programming logic, control narratives, PLC I/O drawings, alarm management database, etc.)
- Project support (e.g. design reviews, HAZOPs, LOPA/SIL assessments, factory acceptance tests)
- Management of Change (MOC) initiation, review, and execution
- Troubleshooting and root cause analysis of controls and instrumented safety systems
- Management of C&A contractors and ensuring good HSSE performance
- The PACO Engineer is the focal point for Alarm Management and Safety Instrumented Systems processes, which are part of the Asset Management System (AMS) elements Ensure Safe Production (ESP) and Manage Equipment Care (MEC), respectively.
Accountabilities
The PACO & CAS teams have a wide range of responsibilities and accountabilities and as such it is recognized that the specific PACO engineer may be assigned to a few of the following specific roles & responsibilities only rather than the wide range of all activities within the total team:
- Support Field Operations, maintenance and Engineering to deliver in solving process disturbances and maintenance and modification engineering activities.
- Pro-active monitoring of PAS, SCADA, PI and PCD-IT (network) integrity and security to ensure compliance to data Integrity safeguards and to optimize reliability and availability.
- Support to Operations, Maintenance and Project organizations for ESD testing and Commissioning, FAT and SAT associated with Automation systems.
- Contribute to the Ensure Safe Production (ESP) process deliverables such as maintaining the alarm database (Variable table) and provide monthly reports on the alarm KPI’s.
- Organize alarm optimization sessions with operations managing BAD actors.
- Provide support and maintain effective relationships with vendor such as engineering contractors, Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider (Invensys), Emmerson, Honeywell etc.
- Participate in LOPA/SIL sessions and HAZOPs
Dimensions
- Regular presence in the Argentina field to provide direct supervision and support of activities is expected. Due to the areal extent of the field, extensive driving is required, including on unpaved roads. A Shell-provided truck will be made available for field use if necessary and defensive driving training is mandatory.
- Interaction with all levels of the organization, including operators, field leadership, asset leadership, engineering, and project delivery staff.
- The PACO Engineer is part of the Surface Technical Team and works closely with other members of the team, including rotating equipment and electrical specialists, and facilities and reliability engineers.
- The PACO Engineer is expected to provide mentoring and coaching across the asset and should possess an HSSE driven (Goal Zero) mindset in order to improve process safety performance.
- Systems in the PACO Engineer scope include, but are not limited to:
- PLC / DCS
- SIS
- HMI
- Communications (wired, wireless, TCP/IP networks, modbus etc.)
- Process Control Network (data acquisition and control, process and control access domain, third party access, etc.)
- PI Server, Processbook, Datalink
- Familiar with Field instrumentation
Requirements
Formally the required skills and competences are consistent with the PACO engineering competence profile requirements of the corresponding job group of this position. Examples of relevant competence areas for this specific role are:
- 3 – 5 years of PACO engineering background or similar technical background in control & automation systems
- Preferably Knowledge of IEC 61508 ‘Functional Safety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety-related Systems’ and IEC 61511 ’Functional safety - Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector’.
- Experience in control optimization
- Experience in on- or offshore Oil and Gas, background in operations C&A or (E&I) support, maintenance and/or projects engineering- or commissioning support.
- Proven interest in control & automation systems for the process industry, interest in process control and process safeguarding and willing to visit offshore facilities.
- Successful candidate must work accurately and have adequate analytical skills with a feel for (fit for purpose) controls.
- Team player with good interpersonal skills. Independent, self-starter. This position requires a motivated individual with good communication skills and a "can do" attitude.
- Fluent in Spanish, moderate to advanced reading/writing/speaking in English is preferred
